Synopsis: Theology student Anson Campbell returns to his New England village with hopes of becoming a pastor. When he notices the town's intolerance and persecution of a prostitute, Bess Morgan, he protects the girl from their puritanical judgments and reminds them of their Christian duties. But in this noble act of protest, he sacrifices his position in the church, as well as his marriage to the pastor's daughter, Mary.
